For a newly-updated 2018 version of this post, click here for “The (Updated) Big List of Free Pro Tools Plugins”. For a long time, it’s been easy to find a whole world of free VST and AU plugins on the web. But for users of Pro Tools – arguably the most popular professional DAW in the U.S. – pickings have always been a bit slimmer. SchOPE is a flexible signal analysis tool that provides three modes of visualizing multiple audio sources at once. This app has four input channels, all simultaneously viewable, allowing for detailed investigation of precisely how your audio channels relate to one another. Free Clip is an intuitive multi algorithm soft clipper/wave shaper plugin, available as a Windows VST or mac Audio Unit. The plugin is still (officially) free to download, but you’ll need to join the beta program first.

At the moment, the best pick for all platforms (32-bit and 64-bit on both Windows and Mac OS) seems to be MOscilloscope (thanks to our reader Huib for the suggestion!), shortly followed by Oscarizor. If you’re on 32-bit Windows, though, s(M)exoscope is still the undisputed champion of freeware oscilloscope plugins.
